We could have wrapped up a new car but this card from Paraguay would have still trumped us! She loves her brother and look at the smile he put on her face!

For the second year McCall decided to donate all of her birthday gifts to the Ronald McDonald House. We had her birthday party at the church and enlisted the help of some older girls to mange the different stations. There were 27 girls there making a blanket and decorations for the House and enjoying a great time. Each of them brought so many nice things to donate! McCall is very excited to head over to Boise to drop off all of the nice gifts. We are sure that it will brighten the holidays for many families in need. I am very proud of her and her decision to serve others on her own birthday. Love you so much McCall!!!

My daugher is a hero!

Where to begin! The last month has been CRAZY with lots of ups and downs. The first news that we received was that my mom has lymphoma. This was devastating news as she has already had to deal with the rotten disease (breast cancer) 10 years ago. She made it through surgery and a bone marrow test and has now started her chemotherapy treatment. So far she has done really well and we are hoping for great results. She will fight hard and we are proud of her.

The next news came two days ago when I took McCall to the doctor. I had noticed that she had lost 15 pounds in a couple of weeks and was concerned that this was not ok. We got right in to her pediatrician the next afternoon and after a couple of tests, found out that she has type 1 diabetes. As I sat there listening to the doctor, I was biting my cheek so hard so I wouldn't cry in front of my sweet McCall. This is an autoimmune disease affecting her pancreas and now it does not produce insulin. We met with the Humprey's Diabetes Center the next day and spent 2 1/2 hours being completely overwhelmed with information. McCall was so mature and sat there like a young lady and asked very important questions about her disease. She had already been online and read about diabetes and was very well prepared for the meeting. We learned how to take check her blood sugar - - and then did it. Kind of scary for her - - but once again, she did great. Towards the end of the appointment they needed to giver her insulin for the first time and that turned out to be quite traumatic. She was very scared (which is fine!!!) and I was scared too since I had to be the one to give it to her. She was crying a lot and I finally lost it myself. My heart was so broken for her and I just wanted to hold her and love her and make it all better. I didn't want to be the one to hurt her, even though I knew what I was doing was going to make her better. On top of all of this, Marc was out of town. We missed him and really wanted him to be there with us. McCall was pretty angry on the ride home. When we got home, it was time for her next insulin dose and we went through the same trauma this time. It was so hard to sit there and have to inject her while she is crying - - which made me cry again. She felt so bad and felt like it was her fault that I was so emotional. She kept telling me how sorry she was for making me cry!!! And she tells me thank you after every time I have to stick her. Even though she has been so grown up about the whole thing, she is definitely questioning why this is happening to her. Right now she has to test her blood sugar 4-6 times a day (finger stick to get blood drop) and has at least 4 insulin injections a day - - sometimes more if her sugars get too high. (As Ia am writing this, I have just checked her blood again and this time it is so off the charts, the meter just read "high" so I have to do it again for the 7th time today - - poor girl) She is still pretty nervous each time but she is so brave and is getting better and better. I just watch her in awe and am so thankful that she is my sweet daughter. Diabetes picked the wrong person to deal with - - because she will not let it get her down! I am so proud of her and her amazing strength. I really don't think I would be able to handle it as well as she has. She is her mother's hero!

Before her big appointment, McCall got the ROYAL TREATMENT! She started the day at Build-A-Bear and picked out a special friend to help her through her day. She picked out a Pink Hello Kitty and named her "HOPE". She dressed her in PJ's and a robe and has used her to practice giving insulin shots with the real needle.

Next we headed over to Paul Mitchell for a special princess pampering. The hair students were dressed up in evening gowns and McCall got an up-do, make-up and her fingernails polished. She looked so beautiful! They also gave her a crown and princess wand - - and she wore the whole princess regalia to her Dr. Appointment!

Spencer spent an hour throwing cousins up in the air at the pool. They loved it and he got in a pretty good work out!

We hiked into Goose Creek Falls. SO BEAUTIFUL! Hadn't planned on getting in the ice cold water, but just couldn't help it! Off came the shoes and socks (even the shorts for M'Kay) and in the water we went. After the numbness wore off, it was great!

All of the kids were scared to get inside this old tree - - had to show them up!

This was one of our many nights out for an evening drive. We saw so many deer, elk, foxes, etc. Such a beautiful place!

The week ended with Kennedy's Baptism! We left McCall Saturday morning, got home, showered, started laundry and then headed over to Nyssa to be part of her special day. Home again that night and back to Parma first thing Sunday Morning for her confirmation. It was a great time!

Pioneer Trek

PIONEER TREK

We just got back from our Trek late last night and it was an amazing experience. The sacrifice and hardship that the pioneers went through is hard to even comprehend and I am so grateful for their courage and perseverance to stand for what they believed. Although we were only there for a short time and can't even come close to enduring what they did, I believe that we all got a small glimpse of what it might have been like.

Ready to go with my Pioneer clothing and 5 gallon bucket! Each of us were only allowed to bring a few items and all of them had to fit inside the bucket.

Our first stop was in Bountiful, Utah where we ate dinner at the park. Of course my boys had to have running - jumping contests up and over the slide!

After dinner we drove up to the Bountiful Temple and then hiked up a very steep hill. We had a fireside by Bishop Bledsoe as we overlooked the beautiful temple.

We stayed the night in Bountiful, right across from the temple at 3 different houses. Our Trek leader's grandparents live there - - so perfect! All of the young men in one house (they slept on an indoor basketball court) the young women were in another house and trek committee in another house. Marc & I were on the food committee so we were up bright and early the next morning getting their breakfast ready to take on the bus. Costco muffins, juice, yogurt and granola. Buses loaded -- off to Martin's Cove!

As we drove and drove and drove there was absolutely NOTHING! I have never been to Wyoming before but it was just a whole lot of not very much! It was exciting to drive into the Cove area and know that we were where the pioneers were.

Once we arrived, ate lunch and loaded the handcarts we had a little free time to go to the visitor's center and Devil's Gate. This is a gorge on the Sweetwater River. The pioneers and their wagons were forced to go around it.

After an orientation and a very touching pioneer movie, we were finally off! Everyone was assigned to a family (no parents or siblings were in the same family) Everyone had a Ma & Pa and new brothers and sisters for the trek. Here is Spencer and Hunter Kroon starting the journey.

Once we trekked in to camp, everyone got to work getting things set up. Marc & Jeff Wadsworth drove into camp to get the cook stoves and dutch ovens ready to go and just as they got everything ready, those dang Wyoming winds came and literally blew all of the tents and covers off and broke the frames. It was terrible! We now have no cover in our kitchen area for the rest of the time we are there. Oh well, pretty sure the pioneers didn't have pop up tents for their convenience!

We got dinner ready for everyone (hamburgers & hotdogs, beans, fresh fruit & veggies) and even got a little help with the burger flippin' from Grant!

Friday was a BIG day! The cooking crew was awake at 5:30 am to get breakfast going which would have been easy - - if the wind wasn't blowing!!!!! Had a hard time keeping heat on the stoves. We served dutch oven biscuits, gravy, hash browns, eggs and fruit. Everyone was very well fed for the long journey ahead. Everyone trekked in a few miles and parked the handcarts. We then had the honor and privilege of walking in to Martin's Cove. We stopped off along the way for a great fireside from Brother Gozart and then continued our journey into the cove. It was an overwhelming feeling as we walked - - in silence - - where the pioneers took refuge from the elements and camped at that very place for a few days. You could picture their tents set up all over the area. However, they were set up in the snow and most of their tents were blown down by the wind. Many died and were buried in that sacred place.

After we trekked back out of the Cove, we had lunch that had already been packed onto the handcarts. We then got to cross the Sweetwater River just like the pioneers. It was very high and we were told that instead of crossing the deep part, we would re-enact it through a swampy marsh that wasn't very deep. Spencer was asked by the missionary there to pull one of the carts so I got in! Then Grant & M'Kay also came and helped. It was so neat to get to be pulled across by my three strong boys.

After all of the women had been carried or pulled across, Bishop decided to go ahead and let everyone try to cross in the actual river. It was awesome! I think about how easy it was for me to hold on to a rope and make my way across. How did they do that with handcarts, babies and small children. Plus it was so cold for them with frozen chunks of ice floating in the river. It was very touching to see Spencer & Grant along with many other men in our ward help people across. The pioneer that Spencer trekked in honor of was one of the men who carried people across the river over and over and over.

After the Sweetwater Crossing we had the "Women's Pull" It was one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life! The men all left and walked up the hill while the women stayed and had a wonderful fireside by Sister Graham. She spoke on being able to do hard things and how each of us have our own "handcarts" that we struggle with every day. She related a couple of stories about strong pioneer women who were faced with very difficult situations and how they over came them. Then the women lined up with the handcarts. And it started to rain. And the wind blew. It was a surreal experience to be standing in those conditions getting ready to experience what the pioneer women did. Being on the food committee, this was the first time I actually pulled the cart. The first part was on a flat surface but it was so sandy that it was difficult to get through. I was completely out of breath before we even got to the hill. All of the men lined the hill and had been instructed to not help unless someone was in immediate danger. Once the women made it to the top, they were allowed to go down and help other carts if they women raised their hand -- asking for help. Up the hill we went. It was very steep and full of rocks. I was in the front with sweet McKenna Graham while Sister Smith, Sister Raymond and Gracie were in the back pushing. Every time our cart hit a rock it threw it off - - honestly it was so hard to pull that cart that was completely packed up that hill. Half way up I lost my footing and fell. There was no way I was going to raise my hand or quit at that moment. We kept going until we reached the top. It was so so difficult for the men to stand there and watch. They so badly wanted to jump in and help us -- many had tears in their eyes as they watched their wives, mothers and sisters struggle. There were many times where the pioneer women had to do this on their own - - but they didn't get to stop at the top. They kept going, mile after mile, day after day.

When everyone trekked back into camp they all went to their family camp areas for dinner. Each family was handed a small bag of flour. They added a little water and made "ash cakes" to eat. This is what would have been rationed out for everyone to eat. It was amazing that not very many of the kids complained. They may not have liked it and they may have been hungry but it was such a powerful example of the sacrifices that the pioneers made. I was impressed with how good their attitudes were. Of course we did surprise them with a full dinner! After we were done eating, everyone had solo time. They were able to read letters from their parents and take some time to reflect on their experiences, read their scriptures and write in their journals. The evening concluded with a beautiful testimony meeting and peach cobbler!

The next morning we served breakfast (french toast and bacon) took down camp and headed back to Idaho. It was a long 12 hour drive but everyone arrived home safely.

I am very grateful for this experience and I so appreciate the sacrifice made by the pioneers to go forward in faith - - moving west for religious freedom. My feet hurt, but I got to wear Nike tennis shoes. They walked with their feet wrapped in clothes in the snow. I was sometimes hungry and I got to eat 3 great meals a day plus snacks. They had rations of flour and ate ash cakes. I missed Taylor & McCall as they weren't with us. Many pioneer mothers buried their children along the trail. I don't think I could have made it as a pioneer and am grateful for what they did, so that I can enjoy the blessings of the gospel in my life today.

We had a GREAT 4th of July! Annual family BBQ at Nielsens in Parma. It is always so fun to see some of our cousins that we only see on the 4th. That evening we headed over to the Benjamins for more yummy food and awesome company. We decided to try out the Melba fireworks for the first time (after hearing for years that they are the BOMB!) and yes they were! We just parked along the side of the road - - set out our chairs and snacks and enjoyed the night. What a fun day!

DONALD TRUMP . . .

Well, M'Kay is at it again!!! He is only 11 years old and has been mowing a few lawns for a couple of years now. This year he has six yards and bought his own riding lawn mower with his own cash. The kid doesn't ever spend a dime!!! He found it all by himself on craigslist, called the man, made an appointment to go see it, withdrew his cash and made the purchase! He loves it and has even been renting it to Grant when he has a lawn to mow. Pretty smart!

Fun Family Saturday!

Today we hiked Table Rock. Ummm . . . I am tired!!! It was was steeper than I remember and I probably should have been in a little better shape before tackling that. However, I made it and did fine. Not sure if any of us will be able to move tomorrow, but we finished it! We had a GREAT time as a family! Of course we missed having Taylor with us - - and Spencer too (he was working) This was a fabulous workout that we look forward to doing again.

Once we made it to the top (slowed by the crazy winds and a little rain) we posed for a family picture. I've got some serious wind hair!

Crazy Kids! Marc & I had a fun time today! It was obvious that 40 is NOT the new "teenager" when it comes to being in shape! We got a workout!

The kids ran ahead of us for a bit and when we got to the car we couldn't find them. Then, down a different path came Grant with McCall in his arms. She fell while running down the hill! Banged up her knee pretty good and scraped up her elbow. NO TEARS AT ALL! In fact, she said that she was pretty proud of her fall!

For Christmas . . . my parents gave all of the couples tickets to WICKED!!! We went last night and it was fantastic. I am amazed the stage production, props, scenery and of course the voices. The talent was unbelievable. We all met for dinner at Angels, downtown Boise!!! YUMMY Filet Mignon, calamari, tiger prawns, brie, and Creme Brulee! What a fun night!

McCall & I had our Mother-Daughter activity at the church on Wednesday. We had a lot of fun together!!! We played a cute M&M game where we asked "getting to know you" questions. Then we each made a glass pendant necklace (sooo cute!) and finished off with a white-elephant dessert exchange. Loved spending time with you Miss!

Fun Summer Night

Taylor is working on the farm, Spencer is at Football Camp at ISU & Grant is on a Scout Campout - - that just leaves us two at home this weekend! We had great plans of taking M'Kay & McCall to the paddle boats in Boise and they closed right before we got there. So we headed to our Tropical Sno Shack and treated ourselves to a delicious shaved ice. Then we hit the Greenbelt and the MK Nature Center. It was such a great night! The river was beautiful and I could go to the Nature Center everyday. Love it! After that we let the kids play at the park for a while and then we headed to find something to eat. It wasn't the night we had planned, but it was fabulous!

Now that he has been out of work since last fall, we decided now was the time. McCall & I took Grandma Mann to the BYU Ballroom Dance Company's performance for grandma's birthday. It was wonderful! We started the evening with Panda Express & Coldstone and then watched the dancers at the Nampa Civic Center. The costumes were unbelievable and the routines were amazing as well. I think McCall's favorite part was meeting some of the dancers afterwards and getting their autographs. It was a nice break from football games!

Cross Country - -Taylor knocked 30 seconds off of his time last week. His PR last year was 19:20 and he just ran an 18:49 in Twin Falls. Watch for more . . . State is in a few weeks.

Taylor took Breanna out to the farm this morning to ride 4-wheelers. Of course it had to be the day where it was about 35 degrees and then the wind on top of it, taking down into the twenties. They had fun anyways and then joined several of their friends for dinner and the dance tonight. I think they had a great time!

Today is the first day back to school. Summer FLEW by and as sad as that is, I am really looking forward to getting back on a schedule. This is the first time in over 16 years that I will not have a child at home during the day. Just so you know, I didn't cry this morning when I dropped the kids off at school!! This time of year brings lots of activities to our family. Taylor runs on Columbia's varsity cross-country team, Spencer is on the freshman football team, Grant plays football for East Valley and M'Kay is starting his first year of tackle! (Yea . . . no more flag football!) It is sure to be a great year!

Today McCall decided that it was time to give another little girl her hair. Mom thought we were going in for a trim, but McCall announced that she wanted to cut it to her chin and donate her ponytail! Tonight was our High School Wrestling Banquet!!! Of course wrestling is pretty much year round in our family, but at least the stress of the high school season is done for a little bit. Taylor had a great year but fell a little short on his goals. He has lettered & made it to state both his freshman and sophomore year, but the medal stand has eluded him. It is back to the weight room and "off-season" wrestling in hopes of reaching some of those goals next year. As his parents, we are super proud of him and his work ethic. He is a good student and an all around great son. Anyone who can endure getting their ear drained 7 times in one season must be dedicated! Congratulations Taylor on your achievements!

If you hate wrestling, you might want to forget about the Salinas Family Blog for the next several months!!! While Grant & Spencer are almost done with the middle school season, Taylor just started high school wrestling practice today. We are wrestling crazies! Last weekend was the big Treasure Valley Tournament and both boys were awesome. Grant pinned his first kid, lost the next one and then lost his 3rd one as well. That last match was awesome and Grant wrestled so tough - - probably the best I have ever seen! Spencer had a great weekend and got first place. This is the valley's most coveted title and we were really excited to see him wrestle so hard and win everything. He had some tough matches but he was definitely focused and just did a super job. Congrats to both boys!!!

Spencer is the MAN of the week!!! Of course all of our children are amazing and wonderful, but his week definitely goes to Spencer! On Wednesday I dropped him off at the Orthodontist for a regular check-up. He was so excited because he was going to find out if he could come back the next week to get his braces off. He called my cell phone and told me that there had been a no-show that morning and wondered if it would be alright to get his braces off right then. OF COURSE!!! But, being the scrapbooker that I am (yea right!) I had to run all the way back home and grab my camera. At least I'll be ready to scrapbook someday (year right!) Needless to say, it was the happiest day of Spencer's Life! Well, until Saturday when he took the championship at the Capital Classic Wrestling Tournament!!! YEA!!! Spencer is a great wrestler and he has won lots of medals over the years - - even gold ones! But during Jr. High he has never placed first. Lots and lots of 2nd & 3rd, but for some reason that darn gold medal has eluded him. Finally, as an eighth grader he did it! He has another tournament next weekend and then the district tournament in a month. Hopefully the momentum will continue! Great job Spencer! We are so proud of you!

Yesterday was another big day! First of all M'Kay recieved the "R Factor" award at school for being responsible, reliable & respectful. He seems to get this every year! What a great kid! Then it was off to Papa Murphy's to pick up dinner (pepperoni jack-o-lantern pizza) and back home to make our traditional ghost cookies. That evening we went to East Valley's parking lot for "Trunk or Treating." Our kids love going around to everyone's trunks and loading up on candy. McCall was a beautiful ladybug, M'Kay was an awesome football player, Grant showed up as a stud wrestler - - in his singlet! and Taylor & Spencer just came downstairs in their regular clothes. They said that they were "Hollister Models!" After getting plenty of candy we came home to make doughnuts and apple cider. A fun night!!!

Another VERY busy weekend for the Salinas Family!!! M'Kay had his last football game scheduled for this morning at 11:45am while Taylor had the State Cross Country Meet in Idaho Falls at 2:00pm. We couldn't all be everywhere so Marc stayed home for football and Lauralyn traveled the 300 miles (with her mom) to watch Taylor run. Can you even believe that the other football team did not show up?!?!?!? Marc was not a happy camper since he was missing state! Anyway, M'Kay's team ended up scrimmaging each other and earning their 3rd place medals. Taylor loved his experience at state and ended up with a great time. For never competing in cross country before, he had an excellant year! Oh yea, one more minor detail. Today is McCall's 6th birthday. Not much of a day when there are so many other things. Her daddy took care of her this morning and then we had a family party at 10:00 pm when everyone was finally home. Happy birthday sweetheart!

We have had a busy last couple of months!!! Taylor made it to state in Cross Country, Spencer finished up football and has started wrestling, Grant is wrestling, M'Kay has one more regular season flag football game -- but the season isn't over for him as he was selected to be on the All-Star Team, and McCall is loving every minute of kindergarten. Sorry, I haven't posted an update for a few days, but it has been a very busy last few days for all of us. I'll try to bring you all upto speed as best as I can about our last few days. As many of you know, Lauralyn has been in Tucson since August 22nd preparing for the Mrs. America pageant. We are so proud of her for her example, her commitment and dedication in preparing for once in a lifetime opportunity. From her waking up early to go and workout at Anytime Fitness to going out and speaking at various events this summer she has represented the great married women of the state of Idaho very well.

So, after 10 days without mom, Sunday morning we all boarded a plane and headed for Tucson so that we could all show mom how much we love her and support her. WOW! We actually made it without foregetting anything, or anyone for that matter.

This was McCall's first flight, and she absolutely loved it. She told me that it looked like she could touch the clouds and asked me if she could open the window.... It broke my heart to tell her no.

After we waited for 2 1/2 hours in the Las Vegas airport (not exactly what 5 kids have the patience for, let alone Grandma and Dad), we finally arrived in Tucson. We proceeded to pickup our minivan rental car, boy did this get a few laughs from my kids. If you know our family, you know that we love our Yukon XL. It took about 40 minutes to get to the Loews Ventana resort, where we were immediately greeted by Lauralyn. 10 days seemed like 10 months to all of us. Ah, what a relief, we were all able to see mom, give her a hug and a kiss (0r two or three for me....).

Finally, the moment we were all waiting for arrived. Sunday night was the preliminary competition for the 2007 Mrs. America pageant and did Mrs. Idaho ever ROCK THE HOUSE!!!

After last years incredible season and the finale at the Fiesta Bowl we have been chomping at the bit to see how this years team is going to be. If tonights performance is any indication of what is to come, it doesn't look like these guys have missed a beat. Even though they have a lot of new and young faces on the team, a lot of the same guys are picking up right where they left off. Ian Johnson did not dissappoint tonight, he had an exciting and fast 50 plus yard dash to the endzone. Taylor Tharp is the guy who has been picked to replace Jared Zabransky and it looks like this Senior is ready to do just that. 56 - 7, that is not too bad for the opening game.

As you can tell, we are HUGE Boise State fans at our house. We love the Broncos! Having grown up here in the Treasure Valley, I have been a Bronco fan for as long as I can remember. Even though I didn't get to see my first game in person until 1986 when Boise State smashed Humboldt State 74 - 0, as a kid, I loved to read the paper, listen to the radio or watch the news to see how the Broncos did.

Tyler's cousin, John Beck, was the starting quarterback for BYU the last 3 years and is now playing for the Miami Dolphins, so Tyler is a DEVOUT BYU fan, but we've got proof that there's a little Bronco blood running through his veins.....;-)

About seven years ago, my AWESOME wife, Lauralyn, gave me season tickets to watch the Broncos. That year, the two of us would go to the games and have a great time. I still can't believe how, incredibly, lucky I am to have married a woman who loves to watch football (Especially the Broncos) as much as I do. The next year we renewed our tickets and we were expecting our 5th child (our daughter McCall). Even though she was pregnant, she would make the trip to the stadium and watch the games with me until October when McCall was born.

Since then, I have had season tickets and I love to take my boys to all the home games.

Tonight I had the opportunity to take my daughter McCall to her first Bronco football game along with her brothers Spencer, Grant and M'Kay. She totally loved every minute of it, especially the cheerleaders, the girl on the horse and the ROTC canon that goes off after every score.

Watch out Maneline dancers...... Here I come!

There is nothing better than watching the Broncos play in Bronco Stadium on a fall evening in Boise, with the view of the foothills, except maybe watching them for the first time with your daughter......: )

I think next year I am going to have to add another ticket to my package so that McCall can come along to all the games.
